1999 Pinot Noir Block 3

DOWNLOAD TASTING NOTE

Tasting Date: 11 November 2008

Open sweet mature pinot aromas. Memories of rich plum pudding laced with port! The palate displays the same spectrum of flavours but without the fruit intensity we have seen in the 97 and 98. As the fruit subsides you are left with a dry and “grainy” finish to the wine. One could argue lacking an “x factor” but a pleasurable wine none the less.

Side note: The very hot and dry season of 99 is showing through with a lack of fruit intensity that is typically seen. But the evident ripeness of the wine wins many fans: see below. Drink

Wine Advocate:1999 Felton Road Pinot Noir Block 3 90 points.

After one oxidized bottle, the second has a complex nose of briary, burnt toast, dark plum, wild mint and dark cherry. Very complex and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied, animally, broody but very well-balanced and defined with good, vibrant acidity. Mulberry, sloes, white pepper on the leathery finish. Good length and a masculine, prune-tinged finish. Very fine. Drink now-2010. Tasted January 2008.
