2001 Chardonnay Block 2
Tasting Date: 14 August 2014
Rich, lemon-straw colour. Aromas of lemon meringue, bright citrus and baking spices. Intense fruit on the palate, very concentrated and mouthcoating. Fruit fades to leave toasted oak characters accented by hazelnut oil. The finish is broad and long. By no means over the hill and in excellent “drink now” condition.
Tasting Date: 24 March 2006
This wine has never ceased to surprise with the way it has aged classically. We opened the Block 2 alongside a 2004 for a couple of Oregon winemakers and they were astonished: blind you would be unable to detect which was the older wine. The block 2 is rich, complex and fresh as the day it was bottled: unfined and unfiltered. The finish is particularly poised. The wine has bags of life ahead of it, but keeping it is in no way a requirement. It is probably as delicious now as it will ever be: I rarely enjoy developed Chardonnay, unless it is a real classic; Raveneau or whatever. If in doubt, enjoy it before the wrinkles start to show. Drink / Hold.
