2004 Pinot Noir Block 5
Tasting Date: 24 November 2011
This wine has really settled into a pleasant state from when we last tasted. There is a complex array of earth and savoury notes to this wine in a manner we rarely see. The fruit is still there but it is the secondary aromas that provide the intrigue. On the palate the wine is supple and textural with savoury flavours giving a sustained finish, while possessing a structure worthy of Block 5.
It would seem in its prime at the moment and should offer great drinking for the next 3 - 4 years before we start to see tertiary or more developed characters starting to dominate. A wine with great focus and purity. As a side note, this wine and the 2004's in general are often selected as the most complex and preferred vintage in a vertical tasting of our Pinot Noir's.
Tasting Date: 14 November 2008
Slow to express itself but it finally comes around to show muted, brooding, fruit, floral, and mocha notes. There is a broad entry and a lower spectrum of flavours to this wine. Not the obvious Central Otago fruit however the wine shows buried opulence which will grow enormously as the wine matures. There seems to be an underlying confidence that should slowly unfold in time. A real keeper.
