2000 Chardonnay Barrel Fermented

Tasting Date: 7 September 2012 Somewhat subdued at first on the nose but eventually a youthful bouquet of dried fruits and sea shells follows. Fresh and bright on the palate with a great core running through. There is a lovely zing to this wine which is keeping it fresh and together. The fruit is remarkably very much alive and surprising at how this wine has changed for the better compared to our tasting in 2006.

The “tone” of the below note is in keeping with what we see 2+ years later. A developed nose of honey, bread, and paraffin. It is no doubt built for pleasure with a textural and viscous palate. Combine that with a vein of rich and youthful fruit, and the panel was left somewhat pleasantly surprised. Big, but good.Drink

Tasting Date: 5 March 2006

This is our least favourite vintage of our Chardonnay. It is rich, thick, oily, and full to the point of fatness. That is the problem for us: if you like big Chardonnay, step forward, but this is just too hefty for our taste. It doesn’t age with nearly the same charm as the much slimmer, more athletically built 2001. The wine is full rich with tropical fruits and ripe stonefruit, and the onset of oxidation adds to the weight. Drink if you like these characters (it was the highest score we ever had from Wine Spectator: draw your own conclusion!).
